Description

Standardize the regulations of the different European countries on the issue of black market labour in order to tackle the phenomenon of illegal hiring and work exploitation in agriculture at European level. This is what the Milan Center for Food Law and Policy and Coop put forward with the project "Be Aware", focusing on the best practices in tackling the problem of work exploitation in agriculture, which will be presented to the European Parliament on the 31st of May. The phenomenon mainly affects a number of Southern European countries such as Italy, Spain and Portugal as well as some Eastern European ones such as Bulgaria and Romania. Even if the phenomenon is not evenly spread across Europe it most certainly deserves the attention of the European legislator- this is the theory presented by the organizers of the initiative. Because in addition to damaging human dignity, it distorts the internal market.

This legislative fragmentation also limits the possibility for the different countries and individuals involved to coordinate their actions and exchange best practices, which do exist: from Spain to Italy and right through to France. The presentation event of the initiative will also see the publication of a special report on work exploitation in agriculture at European level and will see the participation of the President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani,  a number of Members of the European Parliament including Paolo De Castro, Patrizia Toia, Elena Gentile and Maria Arena, Stefano Bassi, the President of Ancc-Coop and Livia Pomodoro, the President of the Milan Center for Food Law and Policy
